What are the benefits of career coaching?
When you feel stuck in your career or are looking for a new challenge, it can be difficult to know which direction to take. You may be asking yourself: What are the benefits of career coaching? This question is especially relevant if you feel lost in your current role or uncertain about the next step in your career.
I’ve faced this dilemma myself, and career coaching helped me find my path and choose a career that truly fits me.
Work that suits you and makes you happy
When I was in a job that didn’t fit me, I noticed it affected almost every aspect of my life. I felt stressed, sometimes unmotivated, and even guilty. Unsurprisingly, this also took a toll on my personal wellbeing. My relationship at the time also suffered.
Thanks to career coaching, I discovered my true passions and strengths. I found answers, and I noticed positive changes in my life. Since understanding what gives me fulfilment, I go to work with more joy and feel happier, more relaxed, and more fulfilled every day.
Who am I
One of the first questions career coaching brings up is “Who am I?” This may seem simple, but the answer has many layers. By getting to know yourself better, you discover what truly matters to you and what drives you. “Know thyself” is a message found in nearly every tradition. For me personally, this meant going back to my deepest values and beliefs. I realized I value integrity, personal growth, and development more than revenue, profit, or status.
What do I want
The question “What do I want?” is central to career coaching. It helps you clarify your goals and ambitions. In my own experience, it pushed me to think about what I wanted to achieve long term. I realized I didn’t just want a job, but a meaningful and fulfilling career. That clarity gave me the courage to take steps toward work that truly fits me — in my case, becoming self-employed.
What can I do
The question “What can I do?” focuses on your skills and talents. By exploring what you are good at, you can better understand which roles and responsibilities suit you. For me, this was an eye-opener. I discovered skills I had underestimated. I was used to adapting myself and shaping my opinion around other people’s expectations. In doing so, I was hiding one of my greatest talents: my ability to observe and articulate. With the support of my career coach, I learned to develop and apply this strength.
How do I get there?
Now that you know what you want, the next step is finding the right job and organization. It’s common knowledge that companies usually hire people with proven experience in the role they’re applying for. So if you’re planning to do something different from what you’ve done so far, getting hired for your dream job can be a challenge. What doesn’t work is sending out dozens of generic applications hoping that one company will give you a chance. Recruiters are usually the first to review your cover letter and CV, and they’ll invite the most suitable candidates based on experience — which may not be you, on paper.
So how do you still get hired? The key is to connect with companies that you believe you’d enjoy working for, without applying formally. Reach out to people who already do the job, or to the manager of the team you have your eye on. Send them a message saying that their role or company seems really interesting to you, and ask if they’d be open to telling you more about it. And skip the long introduction about being at a career crossroads!
This way, people get to know you without looking at your CV first. Sometimes that’s enough to open doors. In other cases, you’ll need a strategy to increase your chances of being hired.
