Do I have a bore-out? Symptoms and what to do

Do you find your work boring or too easy? Do you often feel tired and unfocused? Do you feel disconnected from your job? You may be experiencing a bore-out. A bore-out develops when you are under-stimulated at work for a long period of time, which can lead to serious symptoms. It’s important to recognize these signs early and take action before they further affect your wellbeing.

In today’s work environment, where many of us work in office jobs or remotely, the monotony of daily tasks can quickly take hold. Work that was once challenging and engaging can, over time, become repetitive, leading to feelings of emptiness and boredom. This is a dangerous situation, as a lack of challenge can be just as harmful as too much stress. In this article, we dive deeper into what a bore-out is, how to recognize it, and what you can do to regain energy and fulfilment in your work.

What is a bore-out?

A bore-out is a stress-related condition caused by boredom, lack of challenge, and the sense that your work has no meaning. This can result in a range of physical and mental symptoms such as fatigue, concentration problems, insomnia, and even depression. People with a bore-out often experience a lack of motivation because their work no longer challenges or inspires them.

The symptoms of a bore-out are subtler than those of a burn-out, but can be just as harmful. Complaints such as boredom, restlessness, and a feeling of emptiness in the workplace are common. A bore-out can also lead to physical symptoms such as headaches, muscle pain, and digestive issues. It’s important to acknowledge that these symptoms are not only caused by external circumstances, but also by an inner mismatch between what you are doing and what you truly want to achieve.

A bore-out often develops gradually. At first, you may only notice that you feel less enthusiastic about your work. This can be followed by the sense that you’re wasting your time on unimportant tasks, further undermining your self-image and job satisfaction. Eventually, you may end up feeling cut off from your work and even from your colleagues, which can lead to social isolation and a deeper bore-out.

The difference between bore-out and burn-out

Although bore-out and burn-out may look similar, there are important differences between the two. A burn-out arises from prolonged overload and stress, while a bore-out is the result of underload and boredom. Both can cause exhaustion and health issues, but their root causes are opposite.

A burn-out is often linked to modern work culture, where performance and productivity are central. People with a burn-out feel drained because they are constantly under pressure to do more than they can handle. They become exhausted by the endless stream of tasks and responsibilities, and eventually, they can no longer function.

A bore-out, on the other hand, comes from the opposite problem: having too little to do, or work that doesn’t offer enough challenge. This can happen in environments with a lack of meaningful tasks, or where tasks are so repetitive and uninteresting that they fail to stimulate your intellect and creativity. Instead of being overwhelmed by too much work, you are drained by the absence of stimulating activities.

Work-related causes of a bore-out can include monotonous tasks, lack of challenge, or the feeling that your talents are underused. This can result in a lack of fulfilment and the sense that your work is meaningless. You may also be in a workplace that offers little room for personal growth or innovation, which adds to the feeling of stagnation.

How do you overcome a bore-out?

Overcoming a bore-out often requires a combination of self-reflection, adjustments in your work environment, and sometimes even a career change. It’s important to become aware of what gives you fulfilment at work and actively pursue it. This could mean taking on new responsibilities, talking to your manager about your situation, or even considering a job switch.

It’s also important to take time for yourself and engage in activities that give you energy. This helps you to rediscover a sense of purpose and motivation. For example, taking courses or workshops that match your interests can become a new source of inspiration. It can also help to make time for hobbies and passions outside of work, which contributes to a healthier work-life balance.

Having a clear goal in mind is also useful. Knowing where you want to go in your career helps you take focused action to move out of your bore-out. This could mean developing new skills, finding a mentor, or even reconsidering your career path entirely. Setting small, achievable goals can also help you regain a sense of progress and accomplishment.
